Today I visited the Château d’If and the Îles du Frioul, located in the Mediterranean Sea in front of Marseille. It was a wonderful day and I took to much photos. Never fear – I will pick a samll selection for you.
The tour started with a lot of sailing boats. At the moment there is the 21th Juris’ Cup at Marseille. So the Vieux Port is full of small and large sailing boats.
Château d’if was really cool. This defensive fortification was later used as a prison. It became legendary for its prisoners – the real (a rhinoceros – yes you heard correctly) and the imaginery ones (Monte Christo). Well, I spent a lot of time there, exploring all smaller and larger dungeons – very amazing.
Well, last stop were the Îles du Frioul, where I walked across the awesome meagure nature and ruins from more defensive fortifications (Fort de Ratonneau) and of a hospital (L’Hôpital Caroline). These islands were also used to defend Marseille. And some military is still based there. From the 17th to the 19th the islands were used to quaratine people suspected to have plague or cholera.
