Today I made a tour to Avignon . A beautiful town with a wonderful old city. Exploring narrow streets I finally visited the Place du Palais with a lot of beautiful Romanesque buildings, the Palais de Papes and le Pont d’Avignon.
Le RhônePont d'Avignon
The Saint-Bénezet bridge is also known as the Pont d’Avignon. The bridge was built in th 12th century. Often damaged by floods and during wars it was rebuilt again and again until the 17th century. Today only four of its spans and a small chapel has survived.
Palais des Papes
The Palais des Papes was the seat of the Christian world in the 14th century. For over 70 years this palace was the home of nine popes. Today this large Gothic palace is an Unesco World Heritage site.

Today was a rainy and windy day. So I only did some “indoor” sightseeing.
The Notre Dame de la Garde is a Byzatine basilica in Marseille and is situated on a 162 m high hill, the highest point in Marseille. On the top of the basilica you can see the gilded statue of Virgin Mary.

The basilica also gives you a wonderful 360° panorama view of Marseille.

Later I visited the City Hall of Marseille. By the way, yesterday and today was the “Journées Européennes du Patrimoine” with extraordinary and/or free openings of some places. Some places only opens at these days. So it’s always a good idea to visit Marseille on these days.
