Flamingos are clearly discernible with their reddish color, strongly hooked bills, long legs and necks. Their unique color is caused by their food. The carotenoids contained in the algae and small crustaceans make their plumage pink or orange.
Different kinds of flamingos inhabit South Europe, Africa, South-West-Asia as well as North, Middle and South America. There are even some small groups of flamingos living in Central Europe. It is assumed that there origin are escapees from captivity.
